Troop Parents – I was approached last week by a family member of one of our Eagle Scouts. He is a Texas Veteran, and a part of the Texas Veterans Organization.
For this upcoming Memorial Day, they want to enlist the Troop to help their members during “their” fundraiser. The Veterans organization sets up at several locations around town (Walmart’s, Sams, . . . ) with a booth and take donations
for their work. They want us to man the booths with them. They want (8) people for (8) hours, and will pay the Troop, $500 per day; two day’s (Sat and Sun) is $1000.
IF we are interested, they would really like for us to partner with them for (3) events a year, all veteran related; with the same system of fundraising.
Financially, the pay breaks down to $7.80 per hour for scouts who help. The money would go into the scouts accounts, to be used for scout activities.
I personally, if we choose to do this, would like to enlist as many Veterans we know, and get them to participate; then it is not as hard on our scouts and parents. I know a couple of Vets, and probably some Eagle scouts I could probably
enlist- I expect all of us do. We would not pay these volunteers, the money would go into the general troop fund.
If a scout wanted to make $80 per day, they stay all day, choice would be theirs. I would also be open to family members volunteering, and the money going to their scout’s account. Lots of options.
This would be a pretty serious commitment, but if we enlisted 5 to 10 veterans (that aren’t parents), I would be open to pursuing.
One immediate problem, we have Weblos Woods on Veterans Day Nov 12 &13. So to make that happen, we would definitely need Parents and Outside support to make it happen that Saturday. Think about this. We will probably need to have a meeting
on this next Tuesday the 18th. Neither Rachel or I would be coordinating this, we would need someone else to do this.
Comments, thoughts, suggestions??
Talk soon. J Helton
